Northern Plains Grey Langur

The Northern Plains Grey Langur are a species of Langurs which are also known as Hanuman Langur or Sacred Langurs. They are found only in the Northern parts of India ranging from South of Himalayas to Central India and parts of Bangladesh. The Northern plains Gray Langur are often confused by its twin Southern Plains Gray Langur. The major difference which is very obvious is that the Northern Langur’s tail forms a loop and comes to the back of its head while walking quadrupedally, while the Southern Langur’s tail forms an inverted “U” or “S” tail carriage pattern

A Family Lunch Interrupted

Wishing everyone a very Happy Raam Navmi and I wish that you and your family have a great and prosperous year ahead. Today I am sharing with all of you a series of 3 pictures of Northern Plains Grey Langur scientifically called Semnopithecus entellus and commonly called as “Langur” in Hindi also. They have a high religious value across India because Lord Shiva had taken the avatar of Lord Hanuman in form of a Langur to accompany Lord Vishnu who had taken the avatar of Lord Rama in Human form. It is also believed that many Gods and Goddesses came along with Lord Rama in form of Langurs, Garud, Bear and other animals and plants to accompany Lord Rama in his journey and help him in his quest and this group was termed as “Vaanar Sena” which means “Langur Army” in Sanskrit.

This 3 pic series was captured by me in Gariyaband, a forest rich district of Chhattisgarh with and excellent climate. Actually, I was accompanying one of my very close friend for his work and while he was busy I found my muse in capturing the beauty of the surroundings when I found this Mother & Baby casually foraging nearby.

Beyond Boundaries

These are some more pictures of the same Mother & Son duo that are mentioned above. While I was photographing them they became a bit suspicious and the mother got a bit protective and took the child with her and climbed the boundaries of an area that was a no entry zone for me. These were some of the last shots that I was able to take of them before they disappeared deeper into the forest.

Kidding Around

This picture is also from the Gariyaband episode and after the mother & son duo left me I was left alone or as I thought so, but soon I heard this little guy playing around in a huge Teak tree just above me and he was also curious about my actions. I looked around but didn't find his mother there and this little guy was completely free to explore his curiosity and play around.
